General Safety
Time outside is awesome—when it’s done safely. Use this field-tested guide from Made For Dogs (MFD) to plan, protect, and enjoy every outing with confidence. Guidance below applies to MFD products and partner-brand products sold in our store.
Why outdoor time matters
- Body + mind: Movement maintains weight, builds strength, and reduces stress; new sights/scents provide healthy mental stimulation.
- Confidence + social skills: Calm exposure to people, places, and dogs helps build a steadier, more adaptable companion.
Before you go: plan & prep
1) Choose the right gear
Match the product to your dog’s size, strength, temperament, and activity (daily walk, trail work, vehicle travel, camping, etc.).
2) Sizing & fitment
- Each product page lists brand-provided sizing, weight ranges, and suitability. Specs vary by brand/model—always use the chart on that page.
- Measure accurately (neck/girth/back length as applicable) and compare to the chart. Breed suggestions are only a starting point—every dog is unique.
- If information is missing or you’re unsure about fit, contact us before use.
3) Quick checklist
ID tag/microchip • reliable recall • water & bowl • leash/harness • poop bags • high-value treats • first-aid basics/meds • towel/blanket • weather layer if needed.
4) Know the rules
Verify leash laws, dog-friendly zones, trail/park restrictions, season closures, and fire regulations.
5) Transport to trail
Use travel gear only as directed and attach to approved anchor points. Follow your local/state transport laws. See our Transport & Use Compliance page for details.
Common hazards & how to mitigate
- Traffic & terrain: Leash near roads, cliffs, or drop-offs; mind hot pavement, loose scree, sharp rock, or snow crust.
- Heat: Walk early/late, offer shade/water, rest often. Watch for heavy panting, wobbling, glazed eyes—cool immediately and contact a vet.
- Cold: Limit exposure; dry thoroughly; consider a coat for short-haired or senior dogs; check for ice between pads.
- Water: Use a canine life jacket for boating/currents; avoid unknown depths and fast water. Rinse off lake/sea water.
- Wildlife & strays: Keep distance; prevent chase behavior; stay current on vaccinations.
- Plants & toxins: Learn local hazards (fox tails, toxic mushrooms, blue-green algae). Prevent scavenging; store chemicals/meds out of reach.
- Parasites: Use vet-recommended preventatives; tick check after each outing.
- Paw safety: Hand-test surfaces; if it’s too hot or sharp for you, it’s too hot or sharp for your dog.
During the adventure
- Acclimate gradually: Short, positive sessions first; build duration.
- Supervise at all times; never leave a dog tethered and unattended.
- Hydrate + rest: Frequent small sips; scheduled breaks.
- Re-check fit: Straps/hardware can loosen as you move—verify secure fit periodically.
Aftercare
- Rinse & inspect: Remove grit/salt; check for burrs, thorns, cuts, hotspots, and ticks.
- Clean & dry gear: Follow the product page or label; air-dry away from high heat/sun.
- Retire/replace any item with frayed webbing, popped stitches, cracked/bent hardware, or damaged padding.
Use & limits (applies to MFD + partner brands)
- Use products only for their intended purpose and within stated weight/strength limits.
- Not chew-proof: Remove gear if chewing begins.
- No tie-outs unless the item explicitly states it is rated for tie-out duty.
- Do not modify gear or combine with unapproved accessories; modifications can compromise safety and may void warranties.
Warranty & brand policies
- MFD products: Covered by our warranty (see Warranty page for terms and exclusions).
- Partner-brand products: Each brand sets its own instructions and warranty. We’ll assist where we can or direct you to the brand per their process.
