Hiking Trail Safety

Time outside is good for dogs—and better when it’s planned. Below is a practical, product-aware guide for safe trail days. It applies to both Made For Dogs (MFD) gear and the partner-brand products we curate.

Before You Go

Confirm access & rules

  • Choose dog-friendly trails and review posted regulations (leash, waste, wildlife, seasonal closures).
  • Some areas require pack-out of dog waste; plan for no-bin scenarios.

Health & readiness

  • Hike only if your dog is fit for the route, weather, and footing. Ask your veterinarian if unsure.
  • Current ID (tag/microchip) and a reliable recall are essential.

Fit & sizing

  • Verify size, weight range, and suitability on each product page (MFD or partner brand) before use. If info is missing or you’re unsure, contact us—dogs vary by build, coat, age, and temperament.

Pack the essentials

  • Water & collapsible bowl (do not share natural water sources)
  • Leash (and spare), harness/collar, ID
  • Poop bags + sealed carry pouch/canister (for pack-out)
  • High-value treats; basic first-aid kit; meds
  • Towel/wipes; tick tool; booties if terrain warrants

On the Trail

Leash smart

  • Keep leashed where required and near roads, drop-offs, cliffs, or busy corridors. Yield early and briefly step aside for hikers, bikers, and equestrians.

Heat & cold

  • Hot days: start early/late, shade often, small frequent sips; watch for heavy panting, glazed eyes, slowing or wobble.
  • Cold/wet: limit exposure; dry thoroughly; consider an insulating layer for short-coated dogs; check paws for ice buildup.

Terrain & water

  • Test surfaces (hand-test rule): if it’s too hot or sharp for you, it’s too hot or sharp for your dog.
  • Fast currents, deep pools, and snow bridges are hazards—use a canine life jacket for boats/currents.

Wildlife & plants

  • Maintain distance; prevent chase and scavenging. Know local hazards (foxtails, toxic mushrooms, blue-green algae).

Waste stewardship

  • Bag immediately, pack out, and dispose in a trash receptacle. Never stage baggies “for later” or bury waste.

Product Use & Care (MFD + Partner Brands)

  • Use products only as intended and within listed limits. Re-check strap fit and hardware during the hike.
  • Retire gear that’s torn, cracked, deformed, or leaking (waste bags/pouches).
  • Follow each product page for care/cleaning. Air-dry away from high heat; inspect after every trip.

After the Hike

  • Dog check: paws, pads, nails, coat, ears, tail, armpits, groin—remove burrs/foxtails; do a full tick check.
  • Recovery: fresh water, light meal after cooldown, rest.
  • Gear check: clean, dry, and store; note any items to replace before your next outing.

Emergencies & Contingencies

  • Know the nearest open veterinary clinic and your route out.
  • Carry a basic canine first-aid kit and understand its contents.
  • If you suspect heat injury, toxin exposure, GI distress, or lameness, seek veterinary care promptly.
