Waste Management
Trail Waste Stewardship: Why Picking Up Matters (And How To Do It Right)
At Made For Dogs (MFD), our PNW roots shape how we build gear and how we show up outdoors. Caring for trails means caring for water, wildlife, and other users—and that includes packing out dog waste every time. The guidance below applies to MFD gear and the partner-brand products we curate.
Why it matters
- Ecosystems: Dog waste contains nutrients, bacteria, and parasites that disrupt soils and native plants.
- Water quality: Rain can wash waste into creeks and rivers, harming aquatic life and downstream users.
- Human health: Pathogens in feces can affect people—especially children and immunocompromised users.
- Wildlife behavior: Leftover waste (and abandoned baggies) attracts wildlife and alters natural foraging.
Know the rules (they vary)
- Check the managing agency (city/county/state/national) for leash, waste, and pack-out requirements posted at the trailhead.
- Some sites require pack-out; many bins are seasonal or absent—plan accordingly.
Gear up (simple, reliable, repeatable)
- Bags: Bring more than you think you’ll need. Choose sturdy, leak-resistant bags sized for your dog.
- Carry solution: Use a sealable pouch or canister to stow used bags until you reach a trash bin.
- Hygiene: Pack hand sanitizer and a small wipe.
- Accessibility: Keep bags on a dispenser clipped to your leash, belt, or pack.
For any waste-management item (bags, dispensers, pouches), follow the instructions on the product page (MFD or partner brand). If sizing/compatibility is unclear, contact us before use.
Disposal best practices
- Use on-site trash when available; tie bags securely.
- No bin? Pack it out. Never stage baggies to “grab later,” bury waste, or toss it into vault toilets.
- “Compostable/biodegradable” claims usually require industrial facilities—they are not trail-safe unless the site explicitly accepts pet waste.
Field tips
- In heat, double-bag and use an odor-control pouch.
- Snow only hides waste—pick up and pack out as usual.
- For group hikes or multi-dog outings, bring one carry canister per adult.
Product use (MFD + partner brands)
- Use products only as intended, within stated limits on the product page.
- Replace items that tear, leak, or fail to seal.
- Do not modify dispensers/pouches in ways that compromise containment or safety.
